The Government of Grenada is aware of the situation of the outbreak of Swine Influenza in Mexico and is taking measures to protect the Grenadians nationals studying in that country.
Today, Monday 27th April Cabinet Members discussed the issue and reiterated the importance of keeping the students in Mexico safe. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held consultations with the Embassy of Mexico, in St. Lucia, the Embassy of Grenada in Washington, D.C. and the Consulate in New York. The Ministry of Health convened an inter-sectoral meeting to discuss the situation and to activate the National Influenza Pandemic Preparedness Plan.
The health authorities, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Foreign Affairs consulted to derive measures to help protect the students. There is conviction that allowing the students to travel will place them at risk of being infected and to avoid quarantine enroute as there is no direct flight to Grenada.
A number of steps were outlined to assist the Grenadian students in Mexico to avoid exposure to the flu virus. They are as follows
- Students are to follow the protocol established by the Mexican Government as it relates to the nationals, as they are subject to the same measures applicable to the Mexican population.
- The Swine Flu is a new strain, so there are no guarantees that the vaccination will work.
- This new strain of human influenza is responsive to “Tami flu” or Relenza (Registered names) and is most effective when administered in the early stages of the diseases.
- Students are reminded to adhere to strict hygienic measures such as wearing masks, frequent hand washing with soap; and water, especially after sneezing, covering one’s mouth and nose when there is flu, avoid contact with persons with a cold.
- All students have medical insurance so should any symptoms occur, he or she should visit the nearest health care provider immediately, to receive proper treatment.
- An appeal is again made to all students to follow the protocol established by the Mexican Government.
- Students are encouraged to avoid gathering, if possible and heighten their level of awareness in their communities and stay close to home paying close attention to general instructions
§ Students must be part of the Grenada students communication network by calling in to at least one student each
day. Student Communication Coordinator will be in touch with the Embassy and the Embassy will inform the Minister of
Education daily who will inform the parents.
- Mexican authorities have informed Grenada that the Military will provide masks and other necessary items at strategic points throughout the affected areas.
