David Andrew Considers Emmalin Pierre Fit Only for Polling Division Captain
NDC candidate for St. Andrew South East, Hon. David Andrew, has launched a blistering attack on Opposition Leader Emmalin Pierre’s leadership credentials, declaring that she is unfit to lead Grenada and should instead be relegated to the position of polling division captain.
Speaking at the NDC’s Big Four Rally on October 26, Andrew argued that the November 5 general election represents
a defining moment in Grenada’s history, with the country’s future depending heavily on the quality of its national leadership.
“We are voting for a direction, a direction that will shape the future of this country. And central to that direction is the person who will lead us. The Captain,” Andrew told supporters.
Using a football analogy, Andrew declared that Pierre does not possess the credentials required to compete at the highest level of national leadership.
He argued that while Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell has demonstrated the qualities necessary to lead the country, Pierre has failed to establish herself as a credible alternative.
“The Leader of His Majesty’s Opposition is unfit for the office of Prime Minister and does not belong in the Premier League of national leadership,” Andrew declared.
“In fact, her credentials only qualify her for consideration in the Parish League. Or should I say, the Constituency League, where I will contend with her and have her further relegated to the position of Polling Division Captain.”
Andrew Questions Pierre’s Vision and Leadership
Andrew identified vision, integrity, sound judgment, empathy and competence as essential qualities of national leadership, arguing that Mitchell has demonstrated these attributes during his administration.
He challenged Pierre to articulate a clear vision for Grenada, particularly in critical areas such as healthcare and education.
According to Andrew, the Opposition Leader has focused heavily on criticism of government initiatives without presenting convincing alternatives.
He cited the opposition’s criticism of Project Polaris, the government’s flagship healthcare development initiative, questioning what alternative vision Pierre has offered for improving healthcare.
Andrew presented what he described as a simple formula for effective leadership:
“Character + Competence + Vision = Effective National Leadership.”
He maintained that Mitchell satisfies all three requirements, while questioning Pierre’s record in each area.
Twenty-Three Years in Public Office Under Scrutiny
Turning his attention to St. Andrew South East, where he is challenging Pierre for the parliamentary seat, Andrew questioned what the constituency had received during her 23 years in public service.
He acknowledged Pierre’s years of service, thanking her for her contribution, but insisted that the constituency requires a new, better approach to representation.
Andrew highlighted several projects undertaken during the NDC administration, including the lighting of Progress Park and Telescope Pasture, road improvements, coastal protection works, housing assistance and the construction of the St. Andrew’s Anglican Primary School.
He argued that these developments demonstrated what could be achieved through more responsive constituency leadership.
“We got so much done in the four and a half years that it begs the question: what was happening in the previous 15? Where was the representative?” he asked.
Ministry of Education Records Compared
Andrew, who serves as Minister for Education, also contrasted his record with Pierre’s tenure as Education Minister.
He criticised the handling of industrial disputes involving teachers under the previous administration, particularly the docking of salaries during industrial action.
He pointed to the NDC administration’s repayment of approximately $1.2 million in docked salaries to 1,721 teachers and public officers, alongside pension payments and investments in educational infrastructure.
Andrew also highlighted school construction and expansion, teacher regularisation, scholarships, free tuition and other education initiatives undertaken during his tenure.
He argued that the records of the two administrations demonstrated fundamentally different approaches to education leadership and the treatment of teachers.
Only One Choice for National Leadership, Andrew Declares
Concluding his presentation, Andrew maintained that Mitchell remains the strongest choice to guide Grenada through its next phase of development.
He insisted that Pierre has failed to demonstrate the vision and leadership capacity required for the office of Prime Minister and argued that the people of St. Andrew South East should also consider a change in parliamentary representation.
Returning to his football analogy, Andrew suggested that Pierre’s future political role should be limited to serving as a polling division captain.
With the November 5 general election approaching, Andrew declared that voters face a clear choice between the leadership of Dickon Mitchell and the NDC and that of Pierre and the opposition NNP.
“There’s only one choice for Prime Minister — Dickon Mitchell. There is only one choice for St. Andrew South East — David Andrew,” he told supporters.
